Por otra parte, avenida se define como: \u201cUna elevaci\u00f3n r\u00e1pida y habitualmente breve del nivel de las aguas en un r\u00edo o arroyo hasta un m\u00e1ximo desde el cual dicho nivel desciende a menor velocidad\u201d (OMM\/UNESCO, 1974).<\/p>\n<p>La precipitaci\u00f3n que ocurre en una zona no es constante y el escurrimiento que se genera depende en gran medida de la extensi\u00f3n donde tiene lugar y de sus caracter\u00edsticas (tama\u00f1o, pendiente, tipo de suelo, cobertura vegetal, etc.).
